How I got into teaching...

Posted July 30, 2001 06:15 | Category: Teaching | #

When I was working at SGI, I was mentoring a coworker in Perl programming. I discovered I enjoyed explaining it like that, and decided to look into the possibility of teaching it at the college level. When I heard that De Anza College was looking for a Perl teacher, I applied and was accepted.

From June of 1999 through April 2001, I taught Perl at De Anza College in Cupertino, CA. I have also given several presentations on aspects of Perl programming.

From February to September of 2001, I was the Manager of Training at Cellmania, where I had been consulting for almost two years. I developed a training course on how to use Cellmania's software product, mEnterprise.

I was sent to Germany on a business trip to teach a training class for one of Cellmania's customers in August 2001. Since I was going to be in Europe for the first time, I felt I had to take a few extra days for sightseeing. You can read my travelogue and view pictures here.

In June 2002 I started offering my Perl 101 class. I have also given that class on-site for several clients.

In April 2003 I started teaching Perl 201 class alongside Perl 101. It is offered about once a quarter and has been given on-site as well.

I was one of the founding members of the Oracle Speakers Toastmasters club at Oracle, where I have been working since November 2001 (my "day job"). I have served as Secretary, Vice President for Education, and President of that club. I got my CTM (Competent Toastmaster) award in February, 2004.
