I flew into Frankfurt, arriving early in the morning of Friday, August 3. This was, incidentally, my 30th birthday - but I didn't have the chance to celebrate it :-(. I took the train west to Mainz, and then north along the Rhine, stopping in Bacharach. On Friday evening and all day Saturday, I explored Bacharach and nearby areas on foot and by train.

This guy bought a wood carving at a street market and was bringing it home, near Bacharach. [more]
Hotel-Pension Im Malerwinkel, a cute hotel on the eastern edge of Bacharach. [more]

Hello Bill. Looks like a nice little town. Actually I used google to see whether any other tourists have visited the town recently. I am going to this nice town for about four nights in 2006 and I usually do my research very early so I don't have "panic" when the deadline nears. I just re-check time tables and off I go :) Anyway, I appreciate your time and pictures you have taken on this site. They are of great importance to see how the town looks like. I'll be staying in Im Malerwinkel- If you have any advice for me (and my girlfriend, both 24) please don't hesitate to e-mail me. And if you have more pictures and stories, I'd be very interested in them. |

Bacharach is a beautiful little town and a great base point for exploring the best part of the Rhine. I don't have any more stories or pictures, but here's some advice: As for spending four days there, I think that's a fine idea, but I encourage you to not spend the entire time there. You'll find that although it's cute and quaint and lovely, you can cover the whole town in a day. You could take bicycling or hiking tours of the countryside and vineyards, or take the excellent German trains to visit nearby towns. I also highly recommend the boat tour. If you haven't yet, I also suggest you check out Rick Steves' videos about the area. I'd love to visit Germany also in 2006, but not to see Bacharach - to see the World Cup (soccer). Note that if you're traveling in July you might find higher travel costs and crowds due to the World Cup, so if that's not your thing do it at another time of year. Oh, and come prepared for rain. I had to buy a raincoat and umbrella (which was a challenge, as I didn't have my dictionary and didn't know the German word for umbrella!) during my trip as I had neglected to pack either.ctures and stories, I'd be very interested in them. |

Re: Germany Eric wrote on Sun, 20 Mar 2005 18:29 Your pictures of the Rhine are fantastic - seldom have I seen anything comparable. I was especially looking for photos of Bacharach - the ones you took are awesome! |
